Contemplastic

이번 전시 주제인 Contemplastic은 본 전시를 위해 Contemplation(심사숙고하다, 관조)과 Plastic(유연한) 두 단어를 조합한 신조어이다. 작가는 작업에 임할 때, 자기 주관을 바탕으로 심사숙고한 결단을 단호하게 수행할 수 있어야 한다. 그리고 동시에 외부의 영향을 열린 마음으로 소화하여 자신의 결단을 유연하고 융통성있게 발전시킬수 있기도 해야 한다. 이 과정에서 작가는 작품을 통해 어떤 개념을 표현하고자 하는지, 완성된 장신구가 우리 인체의 어느 부분에 어떤 형태로 착용될지와 같은 주관적 선택의 갈등을 겪게 될 뿐만 아니라, 착용자가 착용함에 있어서 불편함은 없는지, 본인의 작품이 현재 사회, 문화, 경제, 예술, 공예, 현대장신구계등의 흐름과 어떻게 대화하고 소통할지와 같은 간주관적 선택의 갈등도 겪게 된다.이번 전시에 참여하게 된 4명의 여성작가는 위와 같은 고민과 갈등을심사숙고하며 유연하게 대처하려 하는 과정에서 겪은 경험을 기록하고 공유함으로써, 대중과 보다 친밀한 소통을 이룩하고자 본 전시를기획하게 되었다.갤러리 바움의 다섯 번째 현대장신구 기획 전시에 선정된 참여 작가들은 지난해부터 정기적으로 다채로운 분야에 관한 대화를 실행하고, 기록하였다. 이 대화록을 관객과 공유함으로써, 전시된 작품만으로는 알수 없는 면과 공감해 볼 수 있는 기회의 장을 마련하고자 한다. 또한,우리의 개인적, 예술적, 사회적, 문화적인 관점이 일회성 전시를 넘어, 관객과 작품, 그리고 관객과 작가와의 거리를 좁히는 데에 조금이나마 이바지하기를 바란다.

Contemplastic

The title, Contemplastic, is a word newly created for this exhibition by combining the word “Contemplation” and “Plastic.”When we create our art work as jewelry artists, we must be able to make firm decisions based on our philosophy. In addition, we must also be able to digest outside input with an open mind and be flexible enough to let them develop and grow our decisions. During this process, we not only face conflicts of the subjective kind — such as deciding what concepts we want to express, where on the body should the finished work be located, and what the finished form should look like — , but also of the inter-subjective kind — such as ensuring the work is comfortable enough to be worn and that our work communicates and dialogues with the current discourse of our society, culture, the field of art, craft, and contemporary jewelry. By curating this exhibition, we, the 4 participating female artists, hope to share the experience we had while navigating the above conflicts and concerns. Our intent is to facilitate greater intimacy between ourselves and our audience. After we were selected for the 5th Baum gallery art jewelry competition, we regularly engaged in conversations around a variety of subject matters. By publicly sharing the documentation of these conversations, we hope to facilitate an opportunity for the audience to empathize within an aspect which would normally be inaccessible by mere observation of the final art from. We also hope that our personal, social, and cultural points of views will contribute, however minutely, to lessening the gap between the artwork and the viewer
